Established in 1978
The Latino Student Health Project (LSHP) is an organization that was established in 1978 at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). LSHP was created in order to tackle health issues that disproportionally affect the Latino communities within the Los Angeles and Tecate county, a goal we continue to strive for today. We are currently housed under the Community Programs Office (CPO) at UCLA along with many other organizations. Additionally, we serve as one of the community service projects under Latinxs/Chicanxs for Community Medicine (LCCM), another organization at UCLA.
Our Mission
Our mission is to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and promote health education within medically underserved communities.
This mission is carried out by hosting health fairs every quarter (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). During these health fairs, we provide health services such as screenings for BMI, hypertension, anemia, glucose, cholesterol, and more. We always have a team of passionate medical professionals and enthusiastic undergraduate volunteers to help facilitate the event. We are continually trying to improve our health fairs with other health services and we hope to continue serving the communities of Los Angeles and Tecate.
In the past, we have worked in the Los Angeles communities of Hawthorne, Westlake, Pasadena, and Pacoima. Additionally, we have worked with the communities of Tecate and Cerro Azul which are within Baja California, Mexico.
